2nd Soviet carrier headed for duty with Pacific Fleet
A senior US Navy intelligence officer says the Soviet aircraft carrier Novorossisk will enter the Strait of Malacca today on its way to the Pacific, making it the second Soviet aircraft carrier in that region.
The official told Reuters news agency the Novorossisk, accompanied by a cruiser, a guided-missile frigate, and an amphibious support ship, is expected to call at Cam Ranh Bay in southern Vietnam, a former US base now extensively used by the Soviet Navy.
Cam Ranh Bay also provides support facilities for Soviet warships operating in the Indian Ocean, he said, adding: ''At any day of the year, there are 20 to 26 ships operating out of Cam Ranh.''
The aircraft carrier Minsk is already in the Pacific.
