Canadian skater shines in big day at Olympics
On a day highlighted by the precedent-shattering downhill skiing victories of America's Bill Johnson and 17-year-old Swiss prodigy Michela Figini, Canadian speed-skater Gaetan Boucher made history of his own by becoming the first athlete from that nation ever to win three medals in one Winter Olympics. Boucher, bronze medalist in the 500-meter event and winner of the 1,000, picked up his second gold medal in the 1,500-meter race Thursday. Sergei Khlebnikov of the Soviet Union won the silver, and his teammate Oleg Bogiev won the bronze.
In other competition, Sweden won the men's 4x10 kilometer cross country ski race, with the Soviet Union second and Finland third.
