Weakened Solidarity plans no more strikes

Solidarity leader Lech Walesa said his outlawed union - decimated by the arrest and imprisonment of its best activists - will no longer call strikes or demonstrations.

Mr. Walesa, who came to Warsaw from his hometown of Gdansk, told reporters Sunday the stringent post-martial law regulations had forced the union to change its tactics.

''There will be no more calls for demonstrations or strikes, but peaceful, hardworking operation of the union will continue,'' Walesa said.

A few hours after his statement, a pro-Solidarity priest, the Rev. Jerzy Popieluszko, urged the release of ''Solidarity 11,'' activists who have been kept under custody without trial since the imposition of martial law on Dec. 13, 1980.
