India uncovers conspiracy to assassinate politicians

Indian police said Wednesday they had uncovered a conspiracy to assassinate politicians and officials in the troubled north Indian states of Haryana and Punjab, the Press Trust of India reported. Ten suspected members of the plot were arrested as part of an official clampdown.

So far about 350 militant Sikhs have been arrested in security force raids throughout Punjab state, the news service added. Nearly 100 people have been killed and hundreds injured in five weeks of Sikh-Hindu hostilities in the two states.
