Congress acts to avert bankruptcy court failure

Senate Republicans and House Democrats agreed to a 30-day deadline extension that prevented federal bankruptcy courts from going out of business at midnight Saturday.

Under a last-ditch measure approved by Congress Friday, federal bankruptcy courts will remain in operation until midnight April 30 while the Senate and House work on more permanent authorizing legislation.
