A basic how-to book on American folk art; Craft Making for Love or Money, by Gail Buxton. New York: Executive Communications, 12.50.

THIS introductory crafts book, generously illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs, taps the vast and colorful field of American folk art.

Printed in large, readable type, the book begins on a very practical note: how to prepare wood and tinware before applying decorative effects and how to finish pieces for an authentic look and durability.

Other chapters cover stenciling (on mirror frames, boxes, furniture, and fabric) and painted effects such as spongeware and tortoise shell. Additional projects include wood ornaments, linoleum block printing, and cornhusk dolls.

Each project or technique is explained with clear-cut instructions, accompanied by a detailed list of required materials. Although topics are not covered in great depth, the material provides a good base for further experimentation.

The book also offers information about selling craft items, references for further study, and recommended suppliers of craft materials.
