Gunman fire on civilians awaiting tally in Panama
One person was killed and 50 were injured Monday when gunmen opened fire on a crowd of thousands awaiting the results of Panama's first free elections in 16 years, authorities said.
They said heavily armed men wearing the colors of the ruling Revolutionary Democratic Party opened fire on opposition supporters outside the legislative palace. Inside the palace, officials continued tallying votes.
Witnesses said that scores of uniformed security force officials inside the palace stood by passively as the gunmen forced their way inside and that reinforcements sent to the palace mingled outside with the armed civilians.
