Retired-officer group cites Central American buildup

US military involvement is ''rapidly escalating'' in virtually every nation in Central America, and the United States is increasingly becoming directly involved in conflicts in the region, a group of retired senior military officers said Tuesday. The report was issued by the Center for Defense Information, a private research group.

''The Reagan administration is accelerating US preparations for war in Central America,'' retired Rear Adm. Gene La Rocque, the center's director, said in the report.

The report cites a US buildup that includes airfields, radar sites, and weapons storage depots and notes that the US has been staging military exercises in the area almost continuously over the past year.
