$284 billion defense bill approved by US House

The House of Representatives approved a $284 billion fiscal 1985 defense spending bill Friday which would slow the pace of President Reagan's arms buildup.

Approved by the Democratic-controlled chamber by a vote of 298 to 98, the bill is expected to face stiff opposition in the Republican-controlled Senate.
