Peking says US violates pledge with sale of planes
China has condemned Washington's plan to sell 12 C-130 military transport planes to Taiwan. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Wednesday the sale, announced Tuesday by the Pentagon, violated a US pledge to Peking that its arms sales to Taiwan will not exceed, in either quality or quantity, the level set since diplomatic relations between the US and China were established in January 1979.
Spokesman Yu Zhizong also said failure to sign a formal nuclear cooperation pact does not lie with China. He said Washington has raised ''unnecessary new issues for which we express our regret.''
The US, amid reports that China is aiding Pakistan's nuclear weapons program, has sought additional assurances from Peking that it will not use US-supplied nuclear materials to help develop atomic weapons for other countries.
