Israeli Supreme Court lets two extremist parties run

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that two extremist political parties could run in the July 23 general election, overturning bans imposed by the Central Election Committee.

A panel of five judges unanimously upheld appeals by the nationalist Kach movement and the joint Arab-Jewish Progressive List for Peace, which are challenging the bans. The judges issued a written decision saying that on the basis of information before them, ''there was no reason not to allow'' the two parties' candidates to run in the election.

Kach advocates the eventual expulsion of all Arab residents of Israel and the West Bank of the Jordan River. The Progressive List wants Israel to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization and form a Palestinian state on the West Bank.
