Turner announces general election on Canada

Prime Minister John Turner Monday called a general election for September 4. The election call takes advantage of the recent rise of Mr. Turner's Liberal Party in public opinion polls.

Turner also announced that Britain's Queen Elizabeth, who is also Canada's head of state, has postponed her planned summer visit until the end of September. The Queen does not make royal tours to countries during election campaigns.
