Gambian President named to seek Iran-Iraq mediation

Islamic countries mounted a new drive Thursday to end the Persian Gulf war by appointing the President of Gambia, Sir Dawda Jawara, to conduct a mediation campaign between Iran and Iraq.

As the Islamic Conference Organization mediation team began a two-day meeting here Wednesday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry repeated that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein must be removed from power as a condition for ending the war, which began in September 1980.
