Jackson rules out Senate bid; plans to push for Mondale

The Rev. Jesse Jackson announced Wednesday he will not run for the US Senate seat of Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. In a speech to the National Urban League in Cleveland, Mr. Jackson said he will campaign for the Mondale-Ferraro ticket.

By not running in what would have been a rugged Senate campaign, Jackson set himself free to concentrate on getting blacks to register and vote, especially in the South, and creating a potential pool of blacks ready to support Walter Mondale.

Jackson also said he has changed his legal address from Chicago to his home city, Greenville, S.C. There he says he will formally organize what he hopes will become a strong political force, based in 10 Southern states with large black populations.
