Moscow says it expects 8,000 athletes at games
The Kremlin announced plans Thursday for the opening of the ''Friendship-84'' games starting in Moscow Aug. 18, in which 8,000 athletes will take part. Moscow has been careful to say it is not trying to stage an alternative Olympics, which would violate the International Olympic Charter. But the Soviet authorities are clearly trying to make up to the Soviet public for the disappointment caused by the boycott of the Los Angeles games. So far Soviet television has not shown any coverage of the Olympics.
