UAW to GM, Ford: raise or profit sharing won't do

General Motors Corporation offered union members a small raise in a new contract Tuesday, and Ford Motor Company said workers should be satisfied with current profit-sharing plans that could net them $1,700 this year.

United Automobile Workers leaders reacted angrily to the GM and Ford proposals, which did not deal specifically with the union's chief goal of job security for its members.

Union leaders meet today to consider the three-year proposals and select the strike target in current talks. Contracts covering 350,000 workers at GM and 114 ,000 at Ford expire Sept. 14.
