Ford, UAW extend deadline for pact; GM offers new plan

The Ford Motor Company said Wednesday it had agreed with the United Automobile Workers (UAW) union to extend the current labor contract covering about 115,000 hourly workers beyond its midnight Friday expiration.

GM made a complex job security offer Monday, a plan that would guarantee jobs for a significant part of the corporation's 350,000 employees. GM called the offer ''one of the most far-reaching and important ever made to the UAW,'' and said the plan, if accepted, would ''change the way we've managed our business in the past.'' UAW president Owen Bieber said the plan did not go far enough.
