US Secret Service director elected Interpol president

John R. Simpson, director of the Secret Service, was elected this week the first American president of the International Criminal Police Organization, a worldwide law enforcement network.

Interpol was established in 1923 by a few European countries to promote cooperation and exchange of information among law enforcement authorities. The United States joined the organization, which now includes 135 countries, in 1938 .
