Salvadorean mothers demand end to US military aid

About 250 women carrying placards with photos of family members missing in the civil war demonstrated outside the US Embassy last Friday to demand a halt to American military aid to the government. ''We don't want military aid. We want rice and beans,'' they chanted. Speakers among them denounced what they described as ''indiscriminate'' bombing of the countryside.

Meanwhile in Washington, Secretary of State George Shultz has certified that the Salvadorean government is eligible for continued US military aid because it has made progress in curbing human rights abuses and in other areas. The report covers the period between July 2 and Aug. 31.
