Reagan leads Mondale by 16 points in California

The ''Ferraro factor'' does not appear to be leading any resurgence in California for the Democratic ticket. A California Poll taken early this month by the Field Institute shows President Reagan leading Walter Mondale among the state's registered voters by 16 points, 53 to 37 percent.

Rep. Geraldine Ferraro's nomination as Mr. Mondale's running mate generated some excitement here, so the Mondale camp decided in August that Mr. Reagan's home state was winnable and dubbed it a key target.

Reagan's lead cuts across a broad spectrum of demographic groups. Men favor Reagan by nearly 2 to 1. The margin is narrower among women, but Reagan still leads, 48 to 41 percent. A plurality of Hispanic voters backs the President, 46 to 39 percent. Only black and Jewish voters, and those earning less than $10,000 a year, were solidly behind Mondale. Poll director Mervin Field says: ''The poll shows the public feels comfortable with him (Reagan) and where he stands on issues.''
