Orders for durable goods fell in August

Orders to US factories for ''big ticket'' durable goods dropped 0.9 percent in August, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. It said weakness in the transportation equipment and machinery categories was responsible for the decline in the statistic, considered to be a barometer of future factory production.
