W. German antiwar activists circle US military bases
Thousands of West German antiwar activists linked hands Saturday in a 12-mile ''human chain'' stretching around several US military bases in the strategic ''Fulda Gap'' region near the border of communist East Germany, climaxing a week of demonstrations to protest the density of bases in the area.
The Fulda Gap, a valley between low mountains running along the border, historically has been an invasion route into eastern or southwestern Germany. Large concentrations of NATO and Soviet-bloc troops are stationed in the area of the gap.
