Official says Vietnam ready to talk with Kampuchean foes
Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Co Thach said Tuesday his country is ready to talk peace with opponents of the Hanoi-backed regime in Kampuchea (Cambodia), Japanese officials said. Mr. Thach arrived in Tokyo Monday for four days of talks with Japanese officials amid signs Vietnam may be willing to withdraw its troops from Kampuchea.
Vietnam invaded Kampuchea in 1978 and ousted the Khmer Rouge government of Pol Pot, which is part of a three-group coalition recognized by the United Nations. Since then, Hanoi has maintained between 160,000 to 180,000 troops in Kampuchea.
