Methodist ban on ordaining homosexuals in effect Jan. 1

Beginning Jan. 1, self-avowed, practicing homosexuals cannot be ordained ministers in the United Methodist Church, the denomination's Judicial Council ruled Friday, upholding legislation adopted in May.

The decision marked the first time homosexuality had been labeled ''incompatible with Christian teaching'' in the main body of Methodist law.
