Sharon admits being warned of the risk of rebels at camps
Former Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon admitted Wednesday he was warned of the dangers of allowing Phalange fighters into the two Palestinian refugee camps where thousands of Palestinians were later massacred.
Mr. Sharon had first denied he received any warning that a massacre could take place.
The retired general, cross-examined for a second day in the $50 million libel suit against Time magazine, listened to Time lawyer Thomas Barr read findings from an Israeli commission that investigated the massacres at the camps.
He quoted the report as saying that just before the Phalangists were sent in to the camps, Israeli Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan warned Sharon there might be ''rivers of blood there. . . .'' Sharon testified that although he had heard the warning, he had felt no apprehension that such a massacre could take place.
