Two sea lions try out for lifeguard duty
Sea lions trained to assist in ocean rescues may join lifeguards on the beach next summer, although some officials are skeptical the animals will be accepted by the public.
Marine trainers have been working with two 18-month-old California sea lions - Joyce and Faye - since Nov. 20 to determine if they are suitable for beach rescue assignments. They are being trained to carry lifesaving buoys to tired swimmers, tow swimmers to shore, and perhaps locate valuables lost in the surf.
