Sky full of swallows

It's easy to live on the sun's shores, my delicate wind-swift bird. The bright open landscape with the olive leaf, that is your home, high above the blue bed of rivers. What are they to you, the proud flight of an eagle, the lightning in the eyes of the owl? In the elm's light of night you return to the village, domestic is what you are called. My smoke-blue queen, with you would I live by a river which never darkens. Translated from the German by Ewald Osers
