ISRAELI WARPLANES BOMB LEBANESE GUERRILLA POSTS

Israeli warplanes bombed targets of the Syrian-backed Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) southeast of Beirut yesterday, the Army said. The raids destroyed headquarters used to launch attacks against Israel, according to an Army spokesman. In a clash last week, militiamen of the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army killed three DFLP gunmen in Israel's self-declared security zone in southern Lebanon. Israel said the Palestinian guerrillas were heading for its northern border on a mission that violated the PLO's renunciation of terrorism.

In response, the PLO said it could not be expected to control the actions of its splinter groups. ``The PLO is not prepared to condemn operations which any Palestinian organization or faction undertakes,'' a PLO spokesman said.

Palestinian leaders have said they do not consider attacks on Israeli forces in Lebanon or on military targets within Israel or the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip as acts of terrorism.
