S. CAROLINA TO LIMIT HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL

More than half of the United States may be barred as of Wednesday from shipping hazardous waste to South Carolina unless they supply information on their own disposal laws. Gov. Carroll Campbell, who set the March 1 deadline in January, said states would have to certify that they had no impediments to disposal within their borders, or that the repeal of such impediments was imminent, to be allowed to continue sending their waste to the state.

The order affects South Carolina's GSX landfill, which holds close to a billion pounds of hazardous waste, about 70 percent from out of state. Some 33 states used the facility in 1987.
