HUNGARY REVAMPS LEADERSHIP

A two-day overhaul of Hungary's Communist leadership has resulted in the effective demotion of leader Karoly Grosz and a boost for pro-reformers. The Central Committee chose prominent reformer Rezsoe Nyers as party chairman on Saturday and appointed him to a new four-man ruling body that is dominated by advocates of democratic change.

The four will lead the Communist Party on a provisional basis until a crucial party congress Oct. 7 chooses who will lead the party as Hungary prepares for its first free elections next year.

General Secretary Grosz, who sought a middle ground between hard-liners and reformers, had been under fire for hesitancy.
