AMNESTY ASKS COUNTRIES TO ABOLISH DEATH PENALTY

Amnesty International has appealed to six countries to abolish capital punishment. The London-based human rights group called on Iran, Iraq, China, South Africa, the United States, and the Soviet Union to scrap the death penalty. It said Iran had carried out 1,200 of the 1,600 executions it had documented worldwide this year. More than half of those executed in Iran were ordered killed for drug-related offenses and hundreds were put to death for alleged political crimes, Amnesty said in a report on capital punishment worldwide.
