CHINA SAID TO LET DISSIDENT LEAVE EMBASSY

China will allow dissident Fang Lizhi to leave the United States' Embassy in Beijing where he has been since June and travel to Australia before the end of this month, a Hong Kong magazine said yesterday. Both the US and Australian consulates in Hong Kong declined to comment.

Pai Shing magazine, without revealing sources, said an understanding was reached during last month's visit to Beijing by US National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft. It was later approved by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.

Mr. Fang, a scientist and one of China's leading dissidents, sought asylum with his wife in the US Embassy after troops crushed democracy protests in Beijing June 4.

Their presence in the embassy has hindered any improvement in relations between the US and China, strained since the crackdown.
