... AND NOT LANDFILLED [ cf. KEEPING TIRES FILLED ... ]
Is there an environmentally sound way to keep the 240 million scrap tires generated annually out of landfills? The Scrap Tire Management Council, a tire industry group, yesterday released a study proposing five methods.
Four alternatives involve expanding the use of tires as a supplemental fuel in cement kilns, pulp and paper mills, utility boilers, and tire-to-energy facilities.
Another potential growth market involves use of scrap tires as binders and aggregates in asphalt paving. Combined, these methods might reduce the number of tires being landfilled or stockpiled by about 210 million a year by 1995, according the study conducted by management consultants A.T. Kearney Inc.
