BONUSES GAIN AS WAY TO PAY EXECUTIVES

Performance-based incentives are gaining popularity as a means of executive compensation, according to a study by Ernst & Young. A survey of 8,500 executives in 1,200 companies finds that bonus payments rose 34 percent in 1989, while base salaries rose 7 percent. Total executive compensation was up 9 percent. The growth in bonuses was slower than in 1988, which saw a 50 percent rise.
