MIDDLE EAST DEVELOPMENTS In Washington, hundreds of antiwar protesters gathered outside the White House and the Capitol Saturday, and thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in cities across the globe. The peace activists rallied as the US Senate and House authorized President Bush to use military force against Iraq if it does not withdraw from Kuwait by midnight tomorrow (See story, Page 1).... UN Secretary General Javier P'erez de Cu'ellar met Iraqi President Saddam Hussein yesterday for talks widely seen as the last chance to avert war.... Jordan Saturday restored diplomatic relations with Iran more than a decade after they were severed.... US Deputy Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger Saturday met with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir following the latest Iraqi threat to attack the Jewish state if war erupts.

SOVIET UNION AND EUROPE

In Vilnius, at least 11 people were killed and more than 100 injured when Lithuania's main TV and radio center was stormed yesterday by tank-supported Soviet troops who later declared an overnight curfew in the capital of the rebel Baltic Republic (See story, Page 1).... Five people were killed in a night of fierce gun battles in the troubled South Ossetia region of Georgia after masked men raided a police storeroom and stole dozens of weapons, Tass said Saturday. At least a dozen people have been killed in clashes between Georgians and Ossetians in the region since it tried to break from Georgia and set up its own government.... In Bucharest, more than 20,000 protesters marched Saturday demanding the resignation of Romanian President Ion Iliescu.

UNITED STATES

In Manchester, N.H., FBI agents late Saturday arrested Leon Dusoe, a prominent banker who disappeared last week after leaving behind taped confessions he embezzled more than $1 million to bankroll a string of losing stock market investments.... In Ventura County, a man who allegedly gave the AIDS virus to his girlfriend has become the first person in California and perhaps the nation to be prosecuted for knowingly transmitting the disease through otherwise legal sexual activity.... The controversial civil rights leader, the Rev. Al Sharpton, was stabbed and wounded Saturday in the same Brooklyn neighborhood where a black teenager was slain by a mob of whites two years ago.... In Boston, five men were killed and one was injured when they were shot before dawn Saturday in a social club in Chinatown.

SOUTH AFRICA

In the Sebokeng township, gunmen killed 35 followers of anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela in an attack near Johannesburg. The killings heightened tensions between rival black political organizations and cast doubts over the wider search for post-apartheid peace between whites and blacks.
