Baseball Set to Move Into Denver, Miami

THE National League expansion committee will recommend that Miami and Denver be added to the league in 1993. "I was at the meeting when the decision was made," Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent said. "I can't say I was surprised or silent. The committee did a great job. I can guarantee you the process was fair."

The committee will make a full presentation June 12 when the National and American Leagues convene here for their quarterly meetings.

An expansion city must receive approval from nine of the 12 National League (NL) owners and a majority of the 14 American League owners.

The new clubs will field minor-league teams in 1992 and gain major-league players through an allocation draft in November 1992.

The expansion committee is composed of NL president Bill White, Douglas Danforth of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Bill Giles of the Philadelphia Phillies, and Fred Wilpon of the New York Mets.

If Denver and Miami are approved, it will end more than a year of competitive posturing between them and Buffalo, N.Y.; Washington, D.C.; and the Florida entries of Orlando and Tampa-St. Petersburg.
