'FUZZ BUSTERS' NO USE AGAINST LASER DEVICES

* Speeders face a new problem - laser speed detectors.A policeman using this new device catches four times as many speeders who use radar detectors as a policeman using conventional radar would catch, according to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The study, conducted in cooperation with police in Charleston, S.C., shows that police using laser radar devices issued 41 speeding tickets per 1,000 vehicles, compared with 33 per 1,000 using conventional radar. The newly developed speed detector uses a narrow band of infrared laser light instead of a microwave beam to measure speed. The frequency of the laser beam cannot be picked up by radar detectors.
