US SENATE UPHOLDS VETO OF JOBLESS BENEFITS BILL
| WASHINGTON
The Senate failed to override President Bush's veto of legislation providing jobless Americans up to 20 weeks of additional unemployment benefits. Wednesday's 65-to-35 vote was two votes shy of the two-thirds needed to override.Republicans challenged the Senate to adopt their smaller, less costly plan that Mr. Bush has said he would sign. The Senate has rejected the alternative twice as a "pale imitation of what this nation needs."
