BUYING CHRISTMAS TREES BY MAIL

Instead of shopping at a tree lot, many consumers are buying a Christmas tree by mail order. In 1989, 344,000 United States households bought a real Christmas tree through the mail, according to a Gallup Poll cited by the American Christmas Tree Journal. The reason for the mail-order purchases is that consumers are looking for freshly cut trees, according to Dick DeHalls of Christmas In A Box Inc. He says trees sold at tree lots may have been cut as much as two months in advance and are sometimes sprayed with green dye.
