STEEL EXPORTS FELL 8.3 PERCENT IN 1991

Steel imports accounted for about 13.4 percent of the United States market in 1991, well below the 20.1 percent ceiling of the Voluntary Restraint Agreement set by the US government, according to the American Institute for International Steel Inc.

The VRA nations shipped 11.8 million tons to the US last year. Overall, steel imports for 1991 were 15.7 million tons, down 8.3 percent from 1990.

During the same period, US steel exports increased 47.5 percent. The ratio of US steel exports to US steel imports rose to 40 percent in 1991 from 25 percent in 1990.
