Secrets Told And Untold

Some secrets are not meant for one alone like a landscape sheeted in a shroud of fog: one small scrap of sunlight and all is shown. Some secrets are so volatile that they come with a skull and crossbones warning sign to say in giant script: at all costs, let them lie. Some secrets might forever be untold if not accidentally stumbled on, like the boy who, looking for a goat that strayed, flung a stone through a slot high on a cliff and broke the clay jar that sealed the Dead Sea Scrolls. And some secrets are like the painting, "Girl at an Open Half-Door" - in Chicago attributed to Rembrandt? (Rembrandt, that is, with a question mark) and in Berlin, to his student, Samuel van Hoogstraten, and may portray Geertje Dics - or may not.
