GANG MEMBERS TO STAND TRIAL FOR L.A. BEATING
Three alleged gang members charged in the beating of a white truck driver at the start of the Los Angeles riots were ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges of attempted murder, mayhem, and torture.
Damian Williams, 19, known as "Football," Antoine (Twon) Miller, 20, and Henry Watson, 29, are accused of beating and robbing truck driver Reginald Denny as he was stopped at an intersection in South Central Los Angeles, which was the flash point of the recent riots.
The urban riots, which started April 29 and spread across more than 100 square miles of Los Angeles, followed the verdict of a mostly white jury in the Los Angeles suburb of Simi Valley which acquitted four white police officers in the videotaped beating of black motorist Rodney King.
Some 60 people died in the riots.
