MONITOR WINS SEVEN DESIGN AWARDS

The Christian Science Monitor has won seven awards in the latest competition sponsored by the Society of Newspaper Design.
Page designer Karen Everbeck and graphics designer Shirley Horn won a bronze medal for a Points of the Compass feature on Tajikistan. Artist Tom Hughes also earned a bronze medal for a portfolio of illustrations from the Monitor.
Five Awards of Excellence were given to the Monitor as follows: overall design; the single-subject series "China's Villages" by James and Ann Scott Tyson; coverage of the 1992 United States election campaign; a portfolio of photograph designs by staff photographer Melanie Stetson Freeman; and a portfolio of graphics by Mrs. Horn.
The Society of Newspaper Design is an international professional society with 2,250 members in the US and 40 other countries. These awards, representing work done in 1992, will be presented at the society's annual workshop this fall in Dallas.
