WHAT'S IN A NAME

Hispanic is an umbrella term for anyone of Spanish or Portuguese descent, in or outside the US. It extends broadly also to those in the US of Latin American origin, but for this group alone, Latino is preferred. Anglo may distinguish between non-Hispanic and Hispanic or Latino whites. Chicano(s) (fem., Chicana) is a short synonym for a Mexican-American.
