Southward Wings

The talk in the thicket is all of summer now,

how it is fading from the bough.

Birds are pressed by urgencies

of leaves turning red and falling. Song frees

itself of flowers and starts to rise.

Wings shift gold and silver light

southward, leaving more room for night.
