Oklahoma Races Set Up Key US Senate Faceoff

TWO veteran congressmen easily turned aside primary challenges in Oklahoma for the chance to succeed Sen. David Boren (D), whose seat is key to Republican hopes of gaining control of the Senate. Rep. Dave McCurdy (D) and Rep. James Inhofe (R) won their primaries for the right to finish the remaining two years of Senator Boren's term.

In other ballot contests Tuesday:

* In Alaska, a crowded field of candidates vied to succeed Gov. Walter Hickel (Ind.), who announced last week he would not seek a third term. Businessman Jim Campbell captured the GOP nomination, while former Anchorage Mayor Tony Knowles won his second consecutive Democratic nomination. Lt. Gov. Jack Coghill won the Alaskan Independence Party nomination and Green Party candidate Jim Sykes complete the four-way race.

* In South Carolina, former state Rep. David Beasley defeated retiring Rep. Arthur Ravenel for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. He faces Lt. Gov. Nick Theodore (D). Baseball agonistes

BASEBALL talks resumed yesterday amid little sign of movement.

Owners are expected to be at the bargaining table for the first time in nearly 4 1/2 years. Jerry Reinsdorf of the Chicago White Sox, Jerry McMorris of the Colorado Rockies and Drayton McLane of the Houston Astros were to be joined by eight or nine other management officials.
