Don't Condemn Israeli Attacks

The editorial ``Peace For Terror,'' Aug. 17, and the opinion-page essay ``US Policy at Odds With a Just Mideast Peace,'' Aug. 24, contain egregious arguments that suggest an anti-Israel bias.

Perhaps you have forgotten that what is termed the ``peace process'' is being conducted in accordance with the provisions of UN Resolution 242. As such, Israel is not obliged to withdraw from territories under occupation until its ``right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force'' has been satisfied.

Hizbullah terrorists operating from Lebanon oppose the peace process and are acting under cover of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. To suggest that the Israeli retaliatory attacks are illegal is misleading at best and untruthful in the extreme.

Not only the US, but the United Nations and Israel's traditional enemies have found no reason to condemn these defensive actions other than to express indignation over the loss of civilian lives, albeit unintended. Alex Rose, West Orange, N.J.
