UN APPEALS TO SERBS United Nations officials pressed ahead with talks with the Bosnian Serbs yesterday to try to persuade the most powerful players in the Bosnian war to ease their stranglehold on Sarajevo. With food stocks for the Bosnian capital's 380,000 residents down to just a few days' supply as winter closes in, the UN wants the Serbs to allow the reopening of roads into the city, where an aid airlift has become vital. The Serbs tightened their noose around Sarajevo three weeks ago in retaliation for a NATO airstrike. The aid airlift to the city was suspended again Wednesday after a UN transport aircraft was hit by small-arms fire. Entertainment troika

Director Steven Spielberg, record titan David Geffen, and former Disney studios chief Jeffrey Katzenberg announced Wednesday that they are joining forces to produce movies, TV shows, music, and interactive media. The partnership brings together three of show business's most talented and wealthy leaders. The three said they will be equal financial and managerial partners in the unnamed company, expected to open at an undetermined location in early 1995.

US presents Cuba visa plan

The United States Wednesday announced long-awaited details of its plan to permit as many as 26,500 Cubans to migrate legally next year using a lottery, accelerated visa processing, and easier criteria for refugee status. The plan, promised last month in an agreement with the Castro regime, is aimed at ensuring that a recent exodus of Cubans in rickety boats to seek a new life on American shores does not resurge. But it would require that 32,000 Cuban boat people now housed at US-administered havens at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and in Panama return home before they can apply for the new immigrant opportunities.

Wholesale prices drop

Prices at the wholesale level plunged 0.5 percent in September, their biggest drop in more than a year, the US government said yesterday in a report certain to calm preelection inflation concerns on Wall Street. The Labor Department said that the decline in its Producer Price Index, which measures inflationary pressures before they reach the consumer, reflected big declines in the price of gasoline and other energy products and a record drop in coffee prices.

Nobel Literature Prize

Kenzaburo Oe, a novelist and essayist from Japan, won the Nobel Prize in Literature yesterday. He was cited for his ``poetic force [that] creates an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today,'' said an announcement by the literature committee of the Swedish Academy.
