Rock Roll Skating Championships (Fox, 8-10 p.m.): Skating to music is nothing new, but in this high-powered event, Olympic medalists and other top skaters compete strictly to the sound of rock and contemporary pop.

Held in Memphis, the competition pits Nancy Kerrigan against Oksana Baiul, and includes other names like Katarina Witt, Rosalynn Sumners, Scott Hamilton, Viktor Petrenko, Mark Mitchell, and Gary Beacom.

The coverage is hosted by Pat O'Brien and Kurt Browning, and the awards are judged by a panel of celebrity judges. * WEDNESDAY

The New Explorers: The Science of Star Trek (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Yes, it is science - some of it, anyway - along with the futuristic fantasy.

Host Bill Kurtis shows viewers some fascinating parallels - or potential ones - between current fact and the admittedly futuristic concepts of the famous sci-fi format. Its latest incarnation is ``Star Trek: Voyager,'' which debuted Monday on the new United Paramount Network.

Kurtis leads viewers on a trek through NASA, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and other sites as the show traces real-life projects that increasingly look and sound like science fiction.

Garth Brooks/The Hits (NBC, 8-9 p.m.): Country music's hottest star, whose popularity has long since crossed over into the mainstream, offers a little of everything in this special. An interactive segment even lets fans phone in with questions for Brooks.

There are clips from previous shows. And we get songs from his hit album ``Garth Brooks/The Hits'' (as performed on his recent world tour), including ``Friends in Low Places,'' ``The River,'' ``The Dance,'' and ``The Thunder Rolls.''

That last number uses elaborate rain, lightning, and thunder effects as a backdrop.
