WORTH NOTING ON TV

* SATURDAY

The Masters (CBS, 3:30-6 p.m, EDT): Basketball fans who watched the Final Four on this network recently may find this event a bit low key. But the Masters Tournament is, after all, American golf's big one.

Third-round action of the classic is carried live from Georgia's Augusta National Golf Club. This is the 40th year CBS has covered it. Originally the operation required six black-and-white cameras but now calls for 28 color cameras and a lineup of anchors and analysts, as well as host Jim Nantz.

* SUNDAY

The Masters (CBS, 4-7 p.m., EDT): Final round.

* TUESDAY

Biography: Jimmy Carter (A&E, 8-9 p.m.): Even though it does not avoid the rough spots in his administration, the former president is quoted as saying he liked the show -- or 90 percent of it, at least -- when he saw a prebroadcast screening. It deals with his personal life and his career, taking him from his boyhood on a farm in Georgia through his tenure in the White House.

Interviews were conducted not only with Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, but also with a range of others. Pop culture figures in the portrait of the times. In one clip, for instance, Dan Akroyd plays Carter in a ''Saturday Night Live'' bit, spoofing Carter's reputation for focusing on details.

* WEDNESDAY

Shining Time Station Family Special (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): The popular kids' show, normally airing weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to noon, goes prime time for this special. It stars three-time Emmy-winner Jack Klugman, known especially for his role as Oscar in ''The Odd Couple,'' the 1970s series that has had an enduring afterlife in syndication.

Klugman plays Max, an old railroad worker at Shining Time Station. Children steer clear of him, as he is odd and keeps to himself. But Max befriends one boy, helping him deal with his insecurities and learn something about himself -- as well as about baseball. Max, it turns out, is a friend to be trusted.
